Consuming raw cannabis could shape up to be the next wave of medicinal cannabis use. When consumed raw, you are able to benefit from both the terpenes and cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant.
Physician, researcher and leading expert in raw cannabis consumption, Dr. William Courtney believes that “[w]hen [cannabis is] consumed as a leafy green vegetable, you get the whole profile of the plant.”
Most people who choose to consume raw cannabis juice the foliage and add it to a juice blend (or smoothie) or they chop it and add it to a heavily flavored mix, like coleslaw. According to Dr. Courtney, cannabis has the biggest effects on our body’s endogenous cannabinoid system. This system is made up of endocannabinoids, which interact with the cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant.
The journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B published a study in 2012 concluding that, upon activation, the human brain’s cannabinoid system releases antioxidants that have the ability to restore damaged cells and can even rejuvenate mitochondrial efficiency. This process, in turn, improves brain function.
Dr. David Greuner adds that his studies show that juicing raw cannabis can provide the same kinds of medicinal effects that smoking cannabis does without the high. These results, of course, depend on the person consuming the cannabis product and what condition(s) they are trying to treat.
